Ethiopian Sesame Seeds and Sesame Oil: A Global Buyer’s Guide
Ethiopia is one of the world’s leading exporters of sesame seeds — and for good reason. The country’s diverse agroecological zones produce sesame with exceptional oil content, clean flavor profiles, and strong demand from tahini manufacturers, edible oil processors, bakeries, and food brands across the globe. At HBL Ethiopia International Trade, sesame is one of our flagship export commodities.
Where Ethiopian Sesame Comes From
The majority of Ethiopia’s sesame is grown in the lowland regions of Humera (Tigray), Metema (Amhara), and the Benishangul-Gumuz region. These areas offer the hot, dry climate and well-drained soils that sesame thrives in. Humera sesame in particular has earned a strong international reputation for its bright white color, high oil content, and consistent quality.
Types of Ethiopian Sesame Available for Export
1. Humera White Sesame
The premium benchmark of Ethiopian sesame exports. Humera white sesame is known for its uniformly pale color, low free fatty acid (FFA) content, and oil yield typically exceeding 50%. It is the preferred choice for tahini production, sesame oil pressing, and high-end confectionery applications. Buyers in the Middle East, Europe, and East Asia consistently rank Humera sesame among the world’s top origins.
2. Wollega Mixed Sesame
Grown in the Oromia region, Wollega sesame offers a slightly darker seed with a robust, nutty flavor. It is widely used in oil extraction, animal feed processing, and industrial applications. Competitively priced and available in large volumes, Wollega sesame suits buyers looking for consistent supply at accessible price points.
3. Organic Certified Sesame
Growing demand from natural food brands and certified organic product lines has driven strong interest in Ethiopian organic sesame. We work with cooperatives operating under organic certification schemes to supply traceable, documentation-backed organic sesame for buyers who need verified origin and clean-label credentials.
Ethiopian Sesame Oil
Beyond whole seeds, Ethiopia is an increasingly important source of cold-pressed and expeller-pressed sesame oil. Ethiopian sesame oil is prized for its:
- High stability — rich in natural antioxidants (sesamol, sesamin, sesamolin) that give sesame oil one of the longest shelf lives of any vegetable oil
- Distinctive flavor — toasted sesame oil carries a deep, nutty aroma ideal for Asian cuisine, marinades, and premium food manufacturing
- Nutritional profile — balanced omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, vitamin E, and lignans with documented health benefits
- Cosmetic applications — cold-pressed sesame oil is widely used in skin care, hair care, and Ayurvedic formulations due to its emollient and UV-absorbing properties
We supply sesame oil in both crude (unrefined) and refined grades, available in bulk flexi-tanks, IBC containers, or retail-ready packaging depending on buyer requirements.
